A major Microsoft 365 outage disrupted Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive and several other cloud services for users in North America on 23 July.
The incident began at approximately 10:44 AM ET and affected customers using certain network paths. Microsoft later confirmed that it had resolved the issue after reverting a networking update.
Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive affected
The Microsoft 365 outage caused problems across several services. SharePoint Online users saw “Something went wrong” errors, while OneDrive access became intermittent.
Teams users also experienced degraded chat functionality, including images that failed to load. Meanwhile, the Microsoft 365 Admin Center either loaded slowly or did not open at all for some administrators.
Other affected services included:
- Power Automate, where flows failed to load
- Copilot Chat, which suffered delays and failed queries
- Microsoft Loop, where users could not open or load pages
- Excel, which also generated a portion of user reports
At 11:11 AM ET, outage-monitoring platform Downdetector recorded 2,403 reports, far above its typical baseline. SharePoint made up most complaints, followed by Excel and the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.
Microsoft rerouted traffic during recovery
Microsoft investigated the disruption through incident MO1437424 in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. During the response, the company rerouted traffic away from affected infrastructure.
The change produced a partial recovery for some users. However, many customers continued to experience service issues while Microsoft deployed additional mitigation measures.
Earlier in the incident, Microsoft advised organisations to review their business continuity and disaster recovery plans and take action suited to their environment.
By 1:55 PM ET, Microsoft said it had likely identified the cause and was rolling out a fix. The company continued to monitor recovery as the mitigation reached affected infrastructure.
Network update rollback resolves Microsoft 365 outage
Later that evening, Microsoft confirmed that it had reverted a networking update. Service telemetry and customer reports then showed that affected services had recovered.
The company said the Microsoft 365 outage had been resolved for users.
