A hacktivist group calling itself LunarisSec has threatened cyberattacks against European Union systems unless the EU abandons its Chat Control initiatives. The group claims it found serious weaknesses in European infrastructure, but it has not provided verifiable evidence of access or exploitable vulnerabilities.
LunarisSec issues Chat Control ultimatum
LunarisSec shared a series of messages claiming it will target EU systems if Chat Control 1.0 and Chat Control 2.0 are not withdrawn.
The group presents its threats as a defence of privacy and digital freedom. It argues that scanning private communications would weaken security and put users at greater risk.
However, the LunarisSec EU threats remain unverified. The group released edited screenshots that allegedly show access to internal systems and official contacts, but it did not publish data samples or other evidence that could confirm the claims.
Group demands end to message scanning plans
LunarisSec has demanded the immediate and permanent abandonment of both Chat Control proposals. It also called for full transparency around third-party data-sharing agreements and an independent body to oversee data collection practices.
Chat Control 1.0 is a temporary EU measure that is currently in force until 2028. It allows online platforms to voluntarily scan unencrypted private messages for child sexual abuse material.
Chat Control 2.0 remains a proposed permanent regulation. Debate around the proposal has focused on whether platforms could be required to scan private communications, including messages protected by end-to-end encryption.
Group’s capabilities remain unclear
LunarisSec appears to be a relatively new group. Its current Telegram account has been active since January 2026, while earlier accounts were reportedly removed last year.
The group has previously focused on French organisations and claimed to responsibly disclose vulnerabilities. Yet major cybersecurity vendors have not publicly assessed its activities, technical skills or operational capabilities.
As a result, there is no clear evidence that LunarisSec can carry out the attacks it is threatening.
Privacy concerns continue around Chat Control
The group’s messaging reflects wider criticism of legislation that could weaken end-to-end encryption. Digital rights advocates have warned that client-side scanning may create additional security risks and undermine private communications.
Still, the LunarisSec EU threats are unlikely to shape the bloc’s policy decisions. The dispute instead highlights the ongoing political and technical debate surrounding Chat Control and encrypted messaging.
