Families of inmates at the Everglades Correctional Institution (ECI) in Florida are outraged after a serious data breach exposed their private contact details to inmates. The leak, confirmed by Florida Phoenix, happened on July 24th, 2025, and has triggered fears of extortion, threats, and harassment.
According to the report, a staff member at the Level 5 maximum-security prison shared a full list of visitor contact data—including names, addresses, phone numbers, and emails—with every inmate at the facility via email.
Inmates Got Full Access
ECI inmates can access email through secure tablets and interactive kiosks. That made it possible for hundreds of high-risk inmates, including violent and sex offenders, to receive private contact details of recent visitors. The leak has left many family members—especially women—afraid for their safety.
“What if there’s some inmate that doesn’t like another inmate? He could have his family call and threaten the other inmate’s wife,” one woman told Florida Phoenix.
The scenario isn’t far-fetched in a facility known for housing death row inmates and enforcing up to 23-hour solitary confinement for many individuals.
A Preventable Risk?
The Everglades Correctional Institution is part of Florida’s third-largest state prison system, which serves over 89,000 male inmates. Despite the severity of the leak, the Department of Corrections has yet to issue a public statement or notify affected visitors.
Prison reform advocates argue the incident was avoidable. The current visitation system, implemented during the pandemic, requires visitors to submit personal information every time they come—even if pre-approved. This process, they say, is not only burdensome but also unsafe.
“This breach of privacy leads to safety concerns for families,” said Denise Rock, director of Florida Cares. “If it happened once, it can happen again.”
No Response, No Plan
Cybernews reached out to the prison warden, press office, and the Florida Department of Corrections but received no reply. The number of affected individuals is still unknown, and there’s no indication of how officials plan to handle the breach.
Meanwhile, the leak leaves exposed families in a dangerous limbo—fearing that inmates may already be using their personal data for harassment or extortion.
Conclusion
The Florida prison visitor data leak highlights serious flaws in data handling and privacy protections within the corrections system. With no public response from officials and no plan in sight, families remain vulnerable—and angry. For many, the breach is not just a violation of trust but a threat to their safety.
