A major ChatGPT outage prevented users from accessing chats, signing in and creating new accounts.
The disruption began at about 8 PM ET on August 19 and affected people in several regions, including the United States and Europe. Users reported that conversations would not load and that the ChatGPT sidebar remained stuck on loading animations.
The incident also affected Codex and parts of the OpenAI API. OpenAI acknowledged the issue on its status page and later confirmed that affected services had fully recovered.
ChatGPT outage caused login and chat errors
During the incident, existing ChatGPT users could not reliably load previous conversations or send new messages.
Some users encountered “too many concurrent requests” errors when trying to use the service. Others could not sign in to chatgpt.com or complete the account-creation process.
The disruption reached more than ChatGPT’s consumer service. Codex also experienced issues, while multiple API endpoints appeared on OpenAI’s incident page as affected.
OpenAI initially said it had identified login issues across the impacted services and was implementing a mitigation.
OpenAI restored affected services
The company marked the incident as identified shortly after the outage began. It then continued to investigate and work on restoring normal access.
OpenAI’s status history now shows that all affected services recovered. The company did not publicly detail the technical cause of the disruption in the incident update.
Service interruptions can affect users differently depending on their plan, region and the features they use. However, the outage broadly affected core actions such as loading conversations, logging in and registering a new account.
What users can do during a service disruption
When a ChatGPT outage occurs, refreshing the page repeatedly may not help if the problem sits on the service side.
Users can check OpenAI’s status page for live updates and confirmation that engineers are investigating the issue. If a session fails after a recovery notice, signing out and back in or opening a fresh browser session may help.
People with urgent work should also keep local copies of important prompts, outputs and project notes where possible. That can reduce disruption when an online service experiences an unexpected outage.
