A 15-year-old student in Japan has been arrested after allegedly using ChatGPT Bandai accounts code to delete more than 46,000 user accounts on Bandai’s anime streaming platform.
Authorities say the attack disrupted the service and forced the company to suspend its website while investigators examined the security breach.
ChatGPT Bandai Accounts Attack Targeted Streaming Service
Police in Saitama arrested the teenager on fraud-related charges linked to the cyberattack.
According to reports, the suspect wrote the original source code but later turned to ChatGPT for help.
The teen allegedly told investigators that the program was taking too long to complete. He said ChatGPT helped him rewrite the code in another programming language.
The suspect also claimed he had no personal grudge against the streaming service. Instead, he said he carried out the attack because the system appeared easy to access.
Teen Allegedly Changed IP Address Repeatedly
Investigators say the teenager changed his IP address around 30 times after Bandai began blocking the activity.
The repeated changes reportedly allowed the attack to continue despite the company’s defensive measures.
The first warning came when Bandai notified Tokyo police that data linked to nearly 1.5 million accounts had been exposed.
According to The Asahi Shimbun, the incident occurred last November. The teenager was also arrested in June in connection with several other alleged cybercrimes.
Self-Taught Programmer Used AI Assistance
Authorities say the teenager taught himself programming while still in elementary school.
Investigators believe he combined those skills with ChatGPT’s assistance to develop software capable of accessing Bandai’s servers.
Bandai said it takes the incident seriously and will continue conducting regular security checks to help prevent similar attacks.
Anime Industry Remains a Cybercrime Target
The ChatGPT Bandai accounts case is the latest in a series of cyber incidents affecting anime companies.
In March, attackers linked to the ShinyHunters group allegedly breached Sony-owned anime streaming platform Crunchyroll. The breach reportedly exposed around 100GB of data, including email addresses and payment information.
Earlier, in October 2025, hackers compromised the account of a senior employee at Viz Media. The intrusion reportedly exposed business plans, non-disclosure agreements, and employee Social Security numbers.
The latest incident highlights the growing cybersecurity challenges facing companies in the anime and entertainment industry.
