A Railway potential breach has prompted the cloud hosting provider to urge all users to rotate credentials stored on its platform. The warning follows suspicious activity involving systems that hold customer environment variables.
Railway said an unauthorised third party may have accessed encrypted variables and obtained decrypted contents for some of them. However, investigators have not yet established the full scope of the incident.
Initial findings suggest that only a subset of users may face exposure. Nevertheless, the company recommends precautionary action across its user base.
Environment Variables May Contain Sensitive Credentials
Railway allows developers to deploy applications, APIs, databases and other backend services. The platform has approximately 4.8 million users and hosts more than 16 million services.
Its environment variables hold configuration settings that applications need during deployment and operation. These settings can also contain sensitive credentials.
For example, potentially exposed secrets may include API keys, database credentials and private container registry credentials. Access to decrypted values could therefore put connected services at risk beyond Railway itself.
The company’s investigation indicates possible access to this information, rather than confirmed exposure of every customer’s variables.
Railway Potential Breach Linked to Attacks on AI Providers
Railway described the incident as part of a series of attacks targeting AI inference providers.
These providers run AI models and return responses to applications, including those hosted on Railway. Their API keys can provide access to model services and associated usage.
The company said it contacted the relevant providers directly and advised them to revoke all their keys as a precaution.
However, Railway has not publicly detailed the intrusion method or explained how the suspected attacker may have decrypted some variables.
All Users Urged to Rotate Secrets and Check Logs
Although the investigation initially pointed to a limited group of potentially affected users, Railway urged everyone to rotate secrets stored on the platform immediately.
The recommendation covers API keys, database credentials and private registry credentials, alongside other sensitive values held in environment variables.
Additionally, users should review logs from connected services for unusual activity. These checks may help identify whether someone used potentially exposed credentials.
Railway said it would contact users directly if investigators confirm that their accounts suffered a compromise. It also plans to provide further information as the investigation progresses.
Deployment Disruption Continued During the Investigation
Railway initially paused all deployments while investigating the incident. As a result, customers could not roll out new application versions during that pause.
By October 22 at 08:44 UTC, the company had restored builds for Pro and Enterprise workspaces. However, deployments still faced delays, with many waiting in queues.
At that time, builds remained unavailable for Hobby, Free and Trial workspaces. Railway planned to restore those tiers in that order.
The partial recovery therefore did not represent a full return to normal operations. Customers still faced deployment disruption while the company investigated the potential exposure.
