The Naval Group data breach could be one of the most serious cybersecurity incidents to hit Europe’s defense sector in recent years. A threat actor claims to have compromised the French naval defense giant and accessed critical internal systems and documents.
Naval Group is France’s largest military shipbuilder. It plays a central role in developing submarines, frigates, and the nation’s only nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle. The company employs over 15,000 people and generates more than $5 billion annually.
Hackers Claim to Have CMS Source Code
According to a post on a major dark web data leak forum, the attackers accessed:
- Source code for combat management systems (CMS)
- Network architecture data
- Internal documents with varying restriction levels
- Virtual machine access from Naval Group developers
- Confidential communications
The combat systems allegedly affected are used on French frigates and submarines, raising serious concerns about military readiness and cyber defense.
Cybernews researchers analyzed a sample of the leaked files, totaling 13GB. They concluded that the documents and materials appear to be legitimate. The sample includes contracts, system documents, and even submarine camera footage, though some of it dates back to 2003.
Extortion, Not Sales
Unlike typical ransomware groups, the attackers haven’t tried to sell the data. Instead, they seem focused on extorting Naval Group by threatening to leak the stolen files.
So far, there’s no confirmation of the breach from Naval Group. We’ve reached out for comment and will update the article once they respond.
A Long History in French Defense
Naval Group, previously known as DCN, has built some of France’s most important warships. Its dual ownership by the French state and Thales Group underlines its strategic role in national defense.
A breach of this scale would not only hurt the company—it could also expose sensitive military data to adversaries.
Conclusion
The Naval Group data breach may prove to be one of the most damaging cyber incidents to hit the European defense sector. If the attackers’ claims are true, France may need to invest heavily in mitigating the leak’s national security impact.
