Chinese startup Moonshot AI has launched what it describes as the world’s largest open-weight artificial intelligence system.

The Kimi K3 AI model contains 2.8 trillion parameters. According to Moonshot, it can compete with advanced proprietary models from leading US developers.

Kimi K3 focuses on complex reasoning, software development, and long-term autonomous tasks. Moreover, users can download and customize the model instead of relying only on a closed commercial platform.

Kimi K3 Has 2.8 Trillion Parameters

Moonshot claims Kimi K3 is the first open-weight model to approach three trillion parameters.

Parameters are internal values that an AI model learns during training. Developers often use the total number as a measure of scale. However, a larger parameter count does not always produce better results.

The Kimi K3 AI model also supports a context window of one million tokens. Therefore, it can process large documents, extensive codebases, and long conversations within a single session.

Moonshot designed the system for advanced reasoning and knowledge-based work. In addition, the company says Kimi K3 can complete lengthy coding tasks with limited human supervision.

The model includes two architectural improvements intended to increase computing efficiency. However, independent testing will remain important when measuring its performance across real-world tasks.

Moonshot Claims Strong Benchmark Results

Moonshot says Kimi K3 can compete with several leading American AI systems.

The company reported particularly strong performance in GPU kernel optimization. This process improves how efficiently software uses graphics processors while reducing delays.

Third-party evaluations have also placed the model near the top of several rankings. One assessment ranked it first for building web interfaces. Meanwhile, another placed it second overall behind a leading Anthropic model.

Other tests found that Kimi K3 performed at a similar level to advanced systems from OpenAI and Anthropic. The results were especially strong on tasks that required several connected steps.

Nevertheless, benchmarks provide only a limited picture of an AI model’s abilities. Results can change depending on the test, prompting method, tools, and scoring system.

Open Weights Allow Greater Customization

Unlike proprietary AI services, open-weight models give developers access to the model’s trained parameters.

Organizations can download the system, modify it, and run it on their own infrastructure. As a result, they gain more control over data, security, and customization.

However, open-weight does not always mean fully open source. Developers may still withhold training data, source code, or details about how they created the model.

Kimi K3’s huge size also creates a practical barrier. Most individuals and smaller companies will not have enough computing power to operate it locally.

Running a 2.8 trillion-parameter model could require hardware worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Therefore, access to the weights does not guarantee affordable deployment.

Chinese AI Companies Accelerate Development

The launch highlights the rapid progress of China’s artificial intelligence industry.

Moonshot, Z.ai, MiniMax, DeepSeek, and other Chinese developers have shortened their release cycles. At the same time, they have introduced increasingly capable models at lower prices.

Several Chinese systems have now passed the trillion-parameter mark. Before Kimi K3 arrived, models from Meituan and DeepSeek reportedly led the domestic market with 1.6 trillion parameters.

However, direct comparisons with US systems remain difficult. Companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic do not publicly reveal parameter counts for many of their newest models.

Therefore, benchmark performance, operating costs, speed, and reliability may offer more useful comparisons than model size alone.

Launch Affects Chinese AI Stocks

The announcement also affected publicly traded Chinese AI companies.

Shares in Zhipu fell by 27.7% in Hong Kong trading shortly before the market closed. Meanwhile, MiniMax shares dropped by 16.5%.

The declines suggest that investors expect Kimi K3 to increase competition within China’s fast-growing AI sector.

Moonshot has received financial support from major technology companies, including Alibaba and Tencent. The startup was also reportedly seeking $2 billion in new funding.

That investment round could value the company at about $30 billion. In addition, Moonshot may consider a future listing in Hong Kong.

The Kimi K3 AI model strengthens China’s position in the global AI race. Still, its true impact will depend on independent testing, deployment costs, and how widely developers adopt it.
