OpenAI has temporarily eased GPT-5.6 Sol usage limits after a sharp increase in demand for its most advanced AI model over the past two days.

The company has removed the five-hour usage restriction for eligible paid plans and reset current usage, giving subscribers additional capacity for coding and AI-powered workflows.

Five-Hour Usage Restriction Removed

According to OpenAI, the temporary change applies to Plus, Pro, and Business subscriptions.

The company says users are no longer restricted by the standard rolling five-hour usage window, allowing them to continue working without waiting for the limit to reset.

OpenAI introduced the change after heavy usage of Codex and ChatGPT Work over the previous 48 hours.

Shared Usage Limits Still Apply

Normally, ChatGPT tracks both local conversations and cloud-based tasks against a shared usage allowance.

Most plans use a rolling five-hour window, while some models and subscription tiers also have weekly usage limits.

Although the temporary restriction has been lifted, OpenAI has not stated that GPT-5.6 Sol is now completely unlimited.

OpenAI Is Improving GPT-5.6 Sol Efficiency

Alongside the temporary limit changes, OpenAI says it is making GPT-5.6 Sol more efficient.

The improvements are expected to reduce how much of a user’s available quota each request consumes. As a result, subscribers should be able to complete more work before reaching their usage limits.

The company has not explained how these efficiency gains were achieved. However, they may be related to lower token consumption or other backend optimizations.

One-Time Usage Reset Issued

OpenAI has also performed a one-time reset of current usage for eligible subscribers.

The reset immediately restores additional capacity, giving users more room to use GPT-5.6 Sol for coding, automation, and agentic tasks without waiting for existing limits to expire.

The company has not indicated how long the temporary changes will remain in effect.
