Google Chrome extensions will soon face stricter privacy and security requirements under a major policy update announced by Google.

The company has given developers until August 1, 2026, to comply with the new rules. After that date, extensions that fail to meet the updated requirements could face enforcement action or removal from the Chrome Web Store.

Google says the changes are designed to improve user privacy, increase transparency, and address emerging security risks.

Extensions Must Limit Data Collection

Under the new policies, Google Chrome extensions may collect only the user data required to perform their stated purpose.

Developers will no longer be allowed to gather information unrelated to an extension’s core function. Google says the change will strengthen user privacy and reduce unnecessary data collection.

New Disclosure Rules Increase Transparency

Google is also introducing stronger disclosure requirements for browser extensions.

Developers must clearly explain what information an extension collects before installation. They must also notify users whenever their data collection or handling practices change after installation.

According to Google, users should always understand how their personal information is collected and used.

Prediction Market Extensions Are Now Prohibited

Google is banning Google Chrome extensions that facilitate or enable real-money prediction market transactions.

The company now classifies these products as prohibited. As a result, they will no longer be allowed in the Chrome Web Store.

AI Jailbreak Tools Also Face Restrictions

Google is also cracking down on browser extensions designed to bypass AI safety protections.

The new rules prohibit tools that remove AI safeguards, bypass usage restrictions, or disable other built-in security measures.

According to Google, these changes will help create a safer extension ecosystem for users.

Developers Have Until August 1

Google is urging developers to review their Google Chrome extensions before the August deadline.

The company warned that extensions violating the updated policies could face enforcement once the rules take effect.

New Rules Respond to Growing Security Risks

The policy changes come as malicious browser extensions continue to pose cybersecurity risks.

Cybernews has previously reported that many browser extensions request excessive permissions. Some monitor browsing activity, inject malicious scripts, or collect sensitive user data without users realizing it.

Threat actors have increasingly targeted browser extensions in recent years. In April 2026, researchers identified 108 malicious extensions containing backdoors. A month later, dozens of fake AI, VPN, and cryptocurrency extensions were caught stealing user data and executing remote commands.

More recently, Cybernews uncovered a fake Perplexity AI extension that intercepted every search query and every keystroke entered into Chrome’s address bar.

Google hopes the new policies will reduce those threats. By limiting unnecessary data collection and improving transparency, the company aims to make Google Chrome extensions safer for both developers and users.
