The Europe cyberattack surge is growing more intense, with attacks rising sharply in both volume and complexity. According to a new report from Check Point Research, global organizations are now targeted by 1,984 cyberattacks per week on average. That’s a 21% increase year-over-year, and a 143% spike compared to four years ago.

Europe recorded the highest growth in attack volume, with a 22% year-over-year increase. While the region doesn’t face the largest number of weekly attacks overall, researchers say the sharp rise reflects a shift in cybercriminal strategy. Adversaries are exploiting Europe’s geopolitical instability, fragmented regulations, and high-value data environments.

Which Sectors Are Most Targeted?

Some industries are getting hit much harder than others. The education sector remains the most attacked, facing 4,388 incidents weekly—a 31% jump from last year. Researchers blame poor cybersecurity funding and the sheer volume of exploitable data, including login credentials and personal info.

Other top targets include:

  • Government agencies: 2,632 attacks/week
  • Telecommunications companies: 2,612 attacks/week

Governments hold sensitive data and diplomatic leverage, while telecoms are rich in user metadata and infrastructure-level access points.

Regional Breakdown and Ransomware Impact

Regionally, Africa saw the most weekly attacks at 3,365, followed by Asia-Pacific with 2,874. Europe came in lower at 1,669—but its spike in activity was the steepest. North America, meanwhile, continues to suffer the most damaging ransomware attacks, absorbing 53% of global incidents. Europe was second, hit by 25% of all ransomware campaigns.

The most frequently targeted sectors by ransomware crews include:

  • Business services (10.7%)
  • Industrial manufacturing (9.8%)
  • Construction and engineering (9.5%)
  • Healthcare and medical (7.8%)
  • Consumer goods and services (7.6%)

Attackers are following the money, hitting industries where downtime is costly and data is irreplaceable.

Conclusion

The Europe cyberattack surge is no longer a trend—it’s a reality. Threat actors are shifting focus, targeting weaker sectors, exploiting international tensions, and intensifying their ransomware operations. Check Point warns that reactionary tactics won’t cut it anymore. Enterprises must embrace a prevention-first strategy, with layered defenses, real-time monitoring, and employee training. As digital threats grow more aggressive, only proactive resilience will keep businesses secure.
