An AI agent made conflicting moves and left detailed notes during the DIVD breach, giving investigators evidence to examine. The Dutch cybersecurity nonprofit says an attacker deployed the agent after exploiting a security flaw. However, the attacker’s objectives and the consequences of the intrusion remain unknown.

Automated Intrusion Leaves Clues Behind

The Dutch Institute for Vulnerability Disclosure says the agent independently chose its next action as it moved through the compromised environment.

Researchers identified rapid decisions, inconsistent reasoning, and extensive commentary explaining those decisions. Together, these observations underpin DIVD’s assessment that the attack involved autonomous AI.

However, the automation did not produce a coordinated operation. In one example, the agent’s password-spraying activity disrupted its own adversary-in-the-middle attack.

Password spraying tests common passwords against multiple accounts. Meanwhile, adversary-in-the-middle techniques attempt to intercept authentication activity between users and legitimate services.

DIVD believes poor preparation and configuration contributed to the agent’s mistakes. As a result, investigators have numerous traces that could help them establish how the intrusion unfolded.

The organization nevertheless stressed that an error-prone attacker can still cause a serious security incident.

Unnamed Security Flaw Enabled Access

Before the agent began operating inside the network, the attacker exploited a technical vulnerability, according to DIVD.

The nonprofit has ruled out Citrix NetScaler but has not identified the affected system. It also has not disclosed whether a security update addresses the weakness.

Consequently, the available details do not establish whether the incident involved a previously unknown vulnerability.

DIVD says it must balance transparency with protecting its investigation and other potentially exposed organizations. For that reason, it has temporarily withheld parts of its findings.

Researchers Turn Their Attention to Internal Systems

DIVD’s volunteers usually investigate vulnerabilities affecting other organizations. They search for exposed systems, alert the people responsible, and explain how to reduce the risks.

Following this intrusion, however, the nonprofit began examining its own compromised environment. It disclosed the incident late last week after seven years without a comparable breach.

The organization also notified Dutch police, the national data protection authority, and the National Cyber Security Center.

In its Monday update, DIVD outlined the agent’s behavior while leaving the technical entry point undisclosed.

DIVD Breach Update Due October 1

DIVD plans to publish further findings on October 1. In addition, it intends to contact other potential victims of the same vulnerability as soon as possible.

For now, the investigation leaves several central questions unanswered. The organization has not established the attack’s purpose or publicly detailed its full impact.

Although the agent left a substantial trail, researchers still need to determine what its actions accomplished.
