Anthropic has launched Claude Sonnet 5, a new AI model that delivers performance close to its flagship Opus 4.8 model while significantly reducing costs. The company says the latest Sonnet release introduces major improvements in planning, tool use, coding, and autonomous workflows, bringing advanced agentic AI capabilities to a much wider audience.

The release marks a shift in Anthropic’s strategy, as many of the features previously reserved for its premium Opus models are now available in the more affordable Sonnet tier.

Claude Sonnet 5 Improves Agentic AI Capabilities

Anthropic describes Claude Sonnet 5 as its most capable Sonnet model to date and says it was designed specifically for more agentic workflows.

The model can create multi-step plans, use external tools such as browsers and terminal environments, conduct research, and complete complex tasks with far less user guidance than previous Sonnet releases.

According to Anthropic, Claude Sonnet 5 also performs better at checking its own work and correcting mistakes before returning responses.

These improvements make the model particularly useful for software development, automation, research, document analysis, and other workflows that require multiple reasoning steps.

New Model Narrows the Gap with Opus 4.8

Anthropic says Claude Sonnet 5 significantly closes the performance gap between the Sonnet and Opus product lines.

Earlier Sonnet models delivered strong general performance but often struggled with planning, understanding large codebases, and handling complex autonomous tasks. The new release addresses many of those limitations.

The company says internal testing and external benchmark results show notable gains across coding, reasoning, and agentic search workloads.

According to Anthropic, users can now choose between Sonnet 5 and Opus 4.8 based primarily on budget and workload rather than sacrificing large amounts of capability.

Claude Sonnet 5 Costs Much Less Than Opus

One of the biggest advantages of Claude Sonnet 5 is its lower operating cost.

Anthropic is introducing the model with promotional API pricing of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens until August 31, 2026.

After the introductory period ends, pricing will increase to $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.

Even at the standard rates, Claude Sonnet 5 remains considerably cheaper than Opus 4.8, which currently costs $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens.

The lower pricing makes the new model a more practical option for developers running frequent coding sessions, automation pipelines, and large-scale AI workloads.

Anthropic Expands Access to Advanced AI Features

Anthropic says users no longer need its most expensive model to benefit from advanced agentic AI capabilities.

The company believes many of the improvements that first appeared in the Opus family should also become available to developers using lower-cost models.

Claude Sonnet 5 is now available to users on Anthropic’s Free, Pro, and Max subscription plans.

With stronger reasoning, better planning, improved coding performance, and substantially lower pricing than Opus 4.8, Claude Sonnet 5 represents one of Anthropic’s biggest upgrades to its mid-tier AI lineup and offers developers a more cost-effective balance between performance and price.
