laude is down worldwide for some users, with Anthropic confirming elevated errors across several AI models. The disruption is causing failed requests in Claude and third-party tools that rely on the company’s API.
Many users have reported seeing a “529 Overloaded” error while trying to use the service. Anthropic says it has identified the issue and is working to restore normal performance.
Anthropic investigates Claude outage
Anthropic began investigating the incident at 7:49 p.m. UTC on July 29. At 8:33 p.m. UTC, the company said it had found the underlying problem and was working on a fix.
However, Anthropic did not disclose the cause of the outage or provide a timeline for a full recovery.
The issue affects requests to Claude models and may also affect services built on Anthropic’s API. As a result, users may see failed prompts, slower responses or temporary service interruptions.
529 Overloaded error affects users
During the disruption, Claude displayed a message stating that the API was overloaded. A 529 error generally means the service cannot handle the current volume of incoming requests.
This is a server-side issue rather than a problem with a user’s device or internet connection. In most cases, users can only wait and try their request again later.
The error may appear in the Claude web app as well as in external products that use Claude models through the API.
Most Claude models begin to recover
In an update at 17:30 EDT, Anthropic said it was continuing work to fully resolve elevated error rates and latency affecting Claude models.
The company added that recovery had already begun across most models. Still, some users may continue to encounter errors until the incident is fully resolved.
Anthropic has not yet confirmed when all Claude services will return to normal operation.
