OpenAI is investigating an ongoing ChatGPT image outage that is disrupting image generation and file uploads.

Users report that ChatGPT freezes when they upload files. Others encounter errors after submitting image-generation prompts. The incident also affects developers using the Images API.

Users report image generation failures

The problems began more than an hour before OpenAI confirmed the incident. Hundreds of users subsequently reported similar issues through the outage-monitoring service DownDetector.

According to those reports, ChatGPT can hang or freeze during file uploads. Meanwhile, image requests may fail instead of returning a completed result.

OpenAI confirmed that elevated error rates were affecting both ChatGPT image generation and the Images API. The company also detected an increase in failed API requests during its investigation.

Uploaded files may remain unavailable

File processing is experiencing separate failures and delays. Therefore, some files may appear to upload successfully but remain unavailable afterward.

Other uploads may fail before processing begins. These problems can prevent users from accessing documents, images, and other files required for their tasks.

OpenAI said it continues to investigate both the image-generation errors and the file-processing failures.

Mitigation efforts have not fully restored service

OpenAI has introduced mitigation measures and is assessing their effect. However, users may still encounter failed image requests.

The company has not yet revealed the underlying cause of the disruption. It has also not provided a confirmed time for full recovery.

As a result, users may need to retry affected tasks once the service stabilizes.

OpenAI services suffered other recent outages

The ChatGPT image outage follows several other disruptions affecting OpenAI services.

In August, another outage prevented users on multiple subscription plans from starting or continuing tasks.

More recently, ChatGPT and Codex experienced a major service disruption. Users reported errors across almost every important ChatGPT component.

That incident occurred ahead of the expected release of GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI’s next major AI model. The company introduced the model in August and highlighted its advanced cybersecurity capabilities.

For now, OpenAI continues to monitor the latest incident and apply measures intended to restore reliable image generation and file processing.
