Europol Leads Global Crackdown on Illicit Online Drug Trade
European law enforcement has successfully shut down Archetyp Market, one of the most persistent dark web drug marketplaces. The operation was coordinated by Europol and Eurojust, involving enforcement teams across Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain, Sweden, and the United States.
From June 11 to 13, a massive crackdown targeted Archetyp’s admin, moderators, and vendors. Authorities dismantled the platform’s servers in the Netherlands and arrested its 30-year-old German administrator in Barcelona. Over 300 officers were deployed, resulting in critical evidence collection and €7.8 million in assets seized from suspects in Germany and Sweden.
A Criminal Marketplace Serving Hundreds of Thousands
Archetyp Market operated for more than five years and served over 600,000 users globally. The platform enabled the anonymous trade of large quantities of drugs, including MDMA, amphetamines, synthetic opioids, and fentanyl. Its estimated total revenue exceeded €250 million during its operation.
What set Archetyp apart was its willingness to sell highly potent opioids, making it a favored choice for certain dark web buyers. Europol confirmed that this operation ends one of the most extensive underground networks enabling online drug sales.
Law enforcement tracked financial flows and digital traces to bring Archetyp down. This takedown sends a clear warning to other dark web marketplaces operating in similar illicit domains.
