An American Airlines IT outage prompted a brief nationwide ground stop on Tuesday evening. The FAA halted departures after the airline reported a technology issue affecting connectivity across some internal systems.

Flights are now departing again, and American says connectivity has been fully restored. However, delays and some cancellations may continue as the carrier works through the disruption.

FAA halted American Airlines departures nationwide

The outage began on the evening of 28 July. Employees reported problems with several systems used to support daily flight operations.

The disruption affected dispatch, flight planning, boarding, gate services, crew tools and check-in systems. As a result, American Airlines requested a nationwide FAA ground stop.

The restriction covered American Airlines and its regional partners. Airports held flights that had not yet departed at their gates.

The ground stop began at about 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time. It was lifted roughly 45 minutes later.

Systems return, but delays may continue

American Airlines said a technology issue briefly affected connectivity for some systems. The airline said it put the ground stop in place while teams worked on a fix.

Shortly afterwards, systems began returning online. Flights then started departing again.

The airline later said connectivity had been fully restored. However, a short nationwide stop can still disrupt aircraft positions, crew schedules and passenger connections.

Therefore, delays may continue after the original technical issue is fixed. Some flights heading to Charlotte also faced further restrictions as the airline worked through congestion.

Cause of the American Airlines IT outage remains unknown

American Airlines has not explained what caused the connectivity problem. It has also not said whether a third-party provider was involved.

At present, there is no evidence that the disruption resulted from a cyberattack. The airline has described the event only as a technology issue affecting internal connectivity.

Meanwhile, passengers reported delayed boarding and problems accessing the airline’s website and app. Flights already in the air were not affected and landed safely.

Passengers should check flight status before travelling

American Airlines has advised customers to monitor their flight status through its official app or website.

Passengers with Tuesday evening or Wednesday flights should also allow extra time at the airport. In addition, they should watch for rebooking alerts, gate changes and connection updates.

The outage was brief. Nevertheless, its impact may continue until aircraft, crews and airport operations return to their normal schedules.
