A Brazilian bricklayer sold his belongings and traveled approximately 1,200 miles to meet an AI-generated woman he believed was real. Edimar Rocha Martins hoped to begin a new life with the person behind a popular social media profile.

Instead, he discovered that Jéssica Oliveira was a fictional persona. After struggling to find her, Martins approached a local radio station, where he learned the truth.

Online Videos Promised Life on a Farm

The account featuring Jéssica had attracted around 300,000 followers. Its videos invited a man to move to her farm, promising financial support and a life without further work.

Martins took those promises seriously. He left his job, sold his possessions and set out to meet the woman he believed could become his partner.

He later identified loneliness as the main reason for pursuing her. However, the available account does not establish whether he ever communicated directly with the profile’s operator.

It also remains unclear whether a separate account impersonating Jéssica contacted him.

Radio Station Helped Reveal the Truth

After reaching his destination, Martins tried unsuccessfully to locate Jéssica. Eventually, he asked a local radio station for assistance.

There, he learned that the woman from the videos did not exist.

Martins subsequently received help returning home and went to stay with relatives. The account does not specify how much money he lost through selling his belongings or making the journey.

Account Caption Denied Private Conversations

A caption associated with the Jéssica profile claimed that the original account had never spoken privately with anyone. It also described the account’s purpose as earning money through TikTok and selling products on TikTok Shop.

However, that statement came from a machine-translated caption and does not independently establish what happened to Martins.

The distinction matters because the available information does not confirm a direct romance scam involving the original account. What it does describe is a man making major life decisions after believing an AI-generated woman was real.

Synthetic Personas Can Create Real Expectations

The case illustrates how convincing fictional profiles can influence people beyond the screen. A large audience and repeated personal videos may make an invented character appear credible.

Meanwhile, other deceptive accounts use synthetic personas or celebrity likenesses to promote products and paid conversations. Users may believe they are interacting with the person shown, even when someone else operates the account.

As generated images and videos become more convincing, visual clues alone may offer limited reassurance. In Martins’ case, the misunderstanding had already cost him his job, possessions and a lengthy journey before he discovered the truth.
