A Revolut outage disrupted payments, transfers and app access worldwide on October 20, leaving thousands of customers struggling to use their accounts. The company later confirmed that it had restored all services following a Google Cloud incident.
Revolut said customers’ money and personal data remained safe throughout the disruption. However, the outage affected a broad range of everyday banking and investment functions.
Customers Report Problems With Payments and Transfers
Thousands of users reported problems through the outage monitoring platform Downdetector on Tuesday morning. Complaints concerned the Revolut app, mobile banking and transfers between accounts.
Meanwhile, Revolut’s status page listed 28 services as partially unavailable. These included account sign-ins, card payments, transfers, currency exchange and stock trading.
The disruption also affected live support chat. Consequently, customers faced difficulties reaching assistance while several core banking features were unavailable.
Revolut initially acknowledged a disruption across multiple services and said its teams had been working on the problem since that morning. The company also apologised for the inconvenience.
Google Cloud Incident Caused the Revolut Outage
Early reports linked the disruption to problems affecting Google Cloud infrastructure in London. Google Cloud described a “power event” involving its europe-west2 region.
At first, Revolut did not confirm the underlying cause. However, the company later explicitly attributed the temporary app disruption to the Google Cloud outage.
That confirmation clarified the connection between the cloud incident and Revolut’s service problems. Nevertheless, the supplied statements did not explain the precise technical failure or how it spread across individual banking functions.
Revolut Confirms Full Service Restoration
In an update on October 20, Revolut announced that it had fixed the issue and restored services.
The company also repeated its assurance that customer funds and data had remained safe throughout the incident. Its announcement described a service availability problem and did not report any loss of money or exposure of customer information.
Although the restoration update confirmed recovery, the available information did not establish an exact outage duration for every affected service.
Disruption Affected a Broad Financial Platform
Revolut offers banking, money management and investment services to more than 80 million customers across over 160 countries and regions. Its customer base also includes approximately 800,000 businesses.
The outage therefore affected a platform that supports both personal finances and business operations. However, the thousands of public complaints do not establish how many customers experienced problems overall.
Following the recovery, Revolut apologised again to customers who encountered interruptions during the day.
