Microsoft has confirmed a search outage affecting some Microsoft 365 users across Outlook, SharePoint Online and OneDrive.
The issue affects Outlook on the web, the Outlook desktop app, SharePoint Online and OneDrive. Microsoft has linked the disruption to a recent deployment that placed extra pressure on affected infrastructure.
Microsoft 365 search outage affects several apps
Microsoft logged the incident under reference MO1456424 in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.
According to the company, only some users face problems. The outage affects people whose requests pass through the impacted infrastructure when they search for emails, files or other content.
Microsoft said a recent deployment introduced an inefficiency that increased resource use. That higher demand then disrupted search features across the affected services.
The company has not yet confirmed which regions or countries the outage affects.
Microsoft has deployed a fix
Microsoft says it has developed and deployed a fix to reduce the resource pressure behind the incident.
The company expects the change to restore search functionality for all affected users. It has not shared a precise recovery timeline or confirmed whether every user can now search normally.
Microsoft classified the event as an incident, a category it generally uses for significant service issues that create noticeable customer impact.
Similar search issues have hit Microsoft 365 before
Microsoft 365 has experienced several search-related disruptions in recent years.
The company addressed incidents affecting file search in OneDrive, Outlook on the web and SharePoint Online last year. Those outages also prevented users from finding documents, messages and other stored content.
In July, a separate fault caused a larger outage across Azure and Microsoft 365 services in North America. Microsoft later said an automated network maintenance process removed IP routes from more devices than intended.
Microsoft also resolved a major GitHub outage on Monday. That incident affected the platform’s website and API for more than eight hours, causing server errors and problems loading repositories, commits and pull requests.
For now, Microsoft 365 administrators should monitor the Admin Center for updates on the Microsoft 365 search outage and confirm whether search has returned for affected users.
