Microsoft has saved more than $500 million in the past year by using artificial intelligence in its call centers. According to Bloomberg, the savings came entirely from AI handling customer service tasks.

Chief Commercial Officer Judson Althoff revealed the figure during a recent company presentation. He stated that AI tools now assist in many areas, including customer support and software development. The company is also applying AI to handle small-scale customer interactions, which already saves tens of millions of dollars.

Microsoft claims this shift has increased satisfaction for both employees and customers. Automation helps staff focus on more meaningful work, while customers get quicker responses.

Job cuts follow the automation push

Despite these claims, Microsoft is laying off thousands of employees. The company recently announced that 4% of its workforce, or around 9,100 employees, will lose their jobs. This comes on top of another 6,000 layoffs in May.

These job cuts raised questions about whether AI is replacing humans. While many see a clear link, Microsoft’s top legal executive disagrees. Brad Smith, the company’s president, insisted that AI was not the main cause of the reductions.

He explained that the layoffs reflect broader business shifts, not just automation. Still, the timing has made the AI job cuts narrative hard to ignore.

Microsoft promotes AI as a helpful tool

Microsoft insists that AI supports employees instead of absolutely replacing them. Althoff pointed to Copilot, the company’s AI-powered assistant, as an example. He said Copilot helps salespeople find leads faster, close deals sooner, and increase revenue by 9%.

Microsoft argues that AI improves worker performance rather than eliminating roles. However, many remain skeptical as layoffs continue.
