Unlike traditional spam, AI-generated messages exhibit higher linguistic quality. Researchers observed fewer spelling errors, more natural sentence structures, and greater consistency in tone. These improvements make AI-written phishing attempts harder to spot.
Scammers are also using these tools to run highly personalized attacks, such as Business Email Compromise (BEC) schemes. While BEC emails remain a smaller portion of spam overall, their quality has improved. They often mimic real business communications and bypass basic filters, making them more dangerous to organizations.
AI has become a force multiplier for cybercrime. It allows even low-skilled attackers to produce convincing messages at scale. With minimal effort, a single threat actor can generate thousands of variants of a phishing message to test what works.
Scammers Adopt Marketing Tactics for Email Optimization

The research notes a rising use of A/B testing, a method commonly used by marketers to find effective language. Cybercriminals apply this to phishing campaigns by creating multiple versions of the same message.
They then send each version to different groups of recipients. Based on which ones receive more clicks or bypass spam filters, attackers refine future waves. This iterative process results in highly effective scam templates designed to exploit human trust and curiosity.
