A developer has used GPT-6 Astra to build a bot capable of beating one of Balatro’s toughest challenges. The system achieved two verified victories using the Black Deck at the highest Gold Stake difficulty.
Bot Secures Two Verified Balatro Wins
Developer Jacopo Attolini, known as Atol8 on Reddit, created the GPT-6 Balatro bot. His system completed two verified winning runs with the Black Deck at Gold Stake.
Balatro resembles poker because players build scoring hands from standard playing cards. However, it is a strategic deck-building game rather than a conventional poker simulator.
Players combine poker hands with Jokers, card modifiers and other upgrades. Each round requires choices about scoring, deck construction and the game’s economy.
Random cards, shops and modifiers ensure that every run presents a different challenge. Therefore, players cannot rely on a single predetermined sequence of moves.
Attolini initially said his bot could beat Balatro reliably. However, he later clarified that this description overstated its current performance.
Full runs take considerable time, and the bot suffered losses during development. As a result, Attolini does not yet have enough data to calculate a meaningful win rate.
Black Deck Creates a Difficult Challenge
The Black Deck gives the player one additional Joker slot. In exchange, it removes one playable hand from every round.
That trade-off significantly reduces the number of opportunities to score points. It also makes it harder to earn money and improve the deck.
The early stages can prove especially unforgiving. A poor opening may prevent the player from developing enough scoring strength or building a sustainable economy.
Gold Stake adds another layer of difficulty. This highest difficulty level introduces penalties that can affect the availability and cost of Jokers.
Some Jokers may become temporary, while others cost more to keep. Consequently, the bot must evaluate both immediate scoring opportunities and their longer-term financial effects.
The combination of Black Deck and Gold Stake leaves little room for recovery. One bad decision or unlucky draw can end an otherwise promising run.
Astra Makes Decisions While Python Calculates Scores
The bot does not ask GPT-6 Astra to calculate every possible card combination by itself. Such an approach would require the language model to process thousands of numerical possibilities inefficiently.
Instead, the system divides the work between Astra and specialised Python tools.
The Python components calculate scores and evaluate possible plays. They then provide Astra with precise information about the current game state and the likely consequences of each option.
Astra acts as the decision-making layer. It reviews the available information and selects the move that appears most useful.
For example, the model must decide which cards to play or discard. It also chooses which Jokers to purchase and how to prepare for the next round.
This design combines numerical calculation with higher-level planning. The external tools handle exact arithmetic, while the AI compares options and determines a broader strategy.
Balatro Tests AI Under Uncertainty
Balatro provides a useful test because its conditions constantly change. Random cards, Jokers, modifiers and shop items alter the decisions available during every run.
The AI must respond to the current situation instead of replaying a memorised solution. It also needs to balance short-term survival against future scoring and economic growth.
Black Deck intensifies that challenge by giving the bot fewer hands each round. Meanwhile, Gold Stake introduces further restrictions and unpredictable costs.
These mechanics test whether an AI system can make sequential decisions with incomplete information. They also show how language models can work alongside specialised tools instead of handling every task alone.
The two victories do not prove that the system can consistently beat Balatro. Nevertheless, they demonstrate that a GPT-6 Balatro bot can complete one of the game’s most punishing challenges.
