GitHub is experiencing a widespread outage that is affecting its website, API, Actions, Pull Requests, authentication tools and other services. Microsoft confirmed the issue on 17 August 2026 and says it is working to reduce the impact.
The incident is disrupting several tools that developers use to host code, manage projects and run automated software workflows.
GitHub reports elevated error rates
GitHub first confirmed the GitHub outage at 9:40 AM EDT after receiving reports of performance problems across parts of the platform.
The company says its web experience and API traffic are seeing error rates of around 20%. Users have reported server errors and trouble loading repositories, commits and Pull Request pages.
The disruption also affects Issues, Webhooks and API requests, which can interrupt development teams that rely on GitHub to manage active projects.
Repository downloads face higher failure rates
The company says archive downloads and raw repository content downloads are experiencing error rates of roughly 50%.
That could cause problems for users and automated systems that download source code, release files or other repository content directly from GitHub.
GitHub Actions is also operating with degraded performance. As a result, automated builds, software tests and deployment pipelines may fail or take longer to complete.
Authentication and Copilot are also affected
Several authentication-related services have been affected during the GitHub outage, including SAML and OIDC authentication, SCIM and Team Sync.
GitHub later confirmed that Copilot was also experiencing degraded availability. The issue therefore extends beyond the core code-hosting platform and into the company’s AI coding services.
Git Operations, Packages, Pages and Codespaces remain listed as operational. However, many important developer services continue to experience disruption.
GitHub is applying mitigations
At 11:42 AM EDT, GitHub said it had started applying mitigations to address the incident.
Despite those efforts, web and API error rates remained close to 20%. Archive and raw-content downloads were still seeing failure rates of around 50%.
GitHub has not yet shared the cause of the outage. Its investigation remains ongoing.
