An unauthorised copy of Spider-Man: Brand New Day appeared on X and attracted millions of views before the platform removed it hours later.
According to Variety, an account posted a high-quality bootleg of the film at 6:05 a.m. PT. The Spider-Man leak on X reached 5.9 million views, 143,000 likes and 10,000 reshares before X removed the upload at around 3:25 p.m. PT.
Other accounts also uploaded copies of the film. However, X removed those posts soon after they appeared.
Users watched the film before X removed it
The leak quickly spread across X, with users sharing posts about watching the film before the takedown.
The original upload remained online for several hours, giving it enough time to attract a huge audience. The scale of the views has renewed concerns among rights holders about piracy on the platform.
Sony did not comment on the incident.
Long-video uploads create piracy concerns
X expanded video-upload limits for Premium subscribers after Twitter became X under Elon Musk. Premium users can upload videos up to four hours long and files as large as 16 GB.
Free accounts face much lower limits, with videos capped at 140 seconds and files limited to 512 MB.
Copyright owners have criticised the extended video feature because it can allow pirated films to spread quickly. The Spider-Man leak on X follows a similar incident involving Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
An unauthorised upload of The Odyssey appeared on X during the previous weekend and collected more than 2.1 million views. Universal responded by saying it had launched takedown procedures and would pursue appropriate action to protect its content.
Film sets a major opening-day record
Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened in cinemas on July 31 with a reported production budget of $225 million, excluding marketing costs.
Despite the unauthorised upload, the film reportedly earned $168 million at the domestic box office on Friday. That figure gave the film a new all-time domestic opening-day record.
Avengers: Endgame still holds the record for the highest domestic opening weekend, with $357 million. However, reports suggest that Spider-Man: Brand New Day could challenge that result.
The leak highlights the challenge that major studios face when a pirated copy reaches a platform with a massive global audience. Even when platforms remove copyright-infringing uploads, millions of users may already have seen or shared the content.
