Flipper Zero firmware development is entering a new phase as Flipper Devices restructures its software roadmap. The company says it will continue maintaining the firmware but will rely more heavily on community contributions while its internal developers focus on new hardware projects.
The announcement follows concerns from users who believed official firmware development had come to an end after recent comments from the company.
Flipper Zero Firmware Will Continue to Receive Updates
Flipper Devices says the official Flipper Zero firmware is not being discontinued.
Instead, feature development will continue with a smaller internal team supported by community contributors. Company engineers will remain responsible for reviewing changes and maintaining overall project quality.
The shift allows Flipper Devices to dedicate more resources to developing new products while keeping the Flipper Zero platform actively maintained.
Company Shifts Focus to New Hardware
The change comes as Flipper Devices expands beyond the Flipper Zero.
One of its upcoming projects is Flipper One, an open Linux platform that is also being developed with help from the community.
The company has also introduced Busy Bar, a device designed to help people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) reduce distractions. Busy Bar is scheduled to go on general sale on July 14 in the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, and Canada.
Firmware Reached a Stable Milestone
According to Flipper Devices, the firmware has reached a level of maturity that makes the new development model possible.
The company released Flipper Zero Firmware 1.0 in September 2024 after roughly three years of development. The latest stable release, version 1.4.3, became available in December 2025.
Developers say the firmware now includes all previously promised features. They also consider the software development kit, APIs, and core functionality stable enough for wider community participation.
Community Reaction Prompted a New Approach
Recent interviews and online discussions created the impression that firmware development had stopped completely.
That sparked criticism from users, many of whom feared the device would no longer receive meaningful updates.
In response, Flipper Devices announced a new community-focused development strategy intended to keep the project active while making contributor feedback a larger part of the process.
Community Will Help Shape Future Development
Under the revised model, feature requests will be handled through GitHub Discussions.
The company says requests will be reviewed every week and prioritized according to community voting. Users will help determine which improvements receive the most attention.
Community pull requests will continue to be accepted. However, contributors should expect stricter review requirements before changes are approved.
Testing Requirements Become More Rigorous
Flipper Devices also plans to strengthen its quality assurance process.
All firmware changes will require mandatory integration and regression testing before they are merged into the project. Community members will be able to participate in those testing efforts.
The company says it will pay particular attention to AI-generated code that modifies low-level functions because those changes can be difficult to verify.
Developers will also closely review updates affecting the user interface or requiring documentation changes.
Growing User Base Changes Project Management
Flipper Devices says the Flipper Zero community has grown to more than one million users.
According to the company, the volume of messages has become too large for its small development team to manage effectively.
As a result, direct messages have been disabled across the company’s social media channels.
Instead, all feature requests and development discussions will move to GitHub Discussions, where users can submit ideas and vote on proposed improvements.
The company believes the new process will make Flipper Zero firmware development more transparent while giving the community a greater role in deciding the platform’s future.
